Jury finds schizophrenic man died of natural causes - Alameda (CA) Times Star

By Karl Fischer

A jury ruled Wednesday that a schizophrenic man died of natural causes after a struggle with Richmond police in April.

Alan Arce, 51, encountered Richmond officers Pat Davis and Esteban Barragan about 4 a.m. April 25 in the driveway of his residential care facility, after a staffer called for help because he did not seem well.

"As I approached ... he began walking toward the front door of the residence. I noticed he was rubbing his thumbs against his fingertips, and he was continuously saying he had to go, he had to get air," Davis testified at a Contra Costa coroner's inquest.

Arce lived at the house on the 4200 block of Ohio Avenue for 11 years and suffered from schizophrenia for about half his life.

He also had asthma and hypertension, which killed him, a forensic pathologist testified.
